Preservation Delaware: Protecting the Irreplaceable in the First State

INN & RESTAURANT

ADAPTIVE REUSE OF GIBRALTAR
When PDI first began investigating ways to permanently protect the historic Gibraltar property its Board did so with the realization that the property must somehow "pay its own way."  The vision to make sure that happened was to find a private revenue-producing venture with whom to partner -- PDI would restore and open the Marian Coffin Gardens to the public, while the buildings would be leased to a private venture.  Adaptively reusing the mansion and the garage/greenhouse complex as an inn and restaurant seemed the ideal marriage between finding a use for the property while being able to provide public amenity for the community and its visitors.
